Going for Gold!

Uncategorized

It’s been a busy weekend of sporting action on the TV at our house.  I’m a tennis fan, my daughter is into the AFL and my husband likes to keep up with the cricket (being an Englishman, he delighted in England’s recent Ashes win…and was quite vocal about it at work).  So there’s been alot of competition for the remote control as we negotiated timeslots to watch our respective sports.

All this sporting action got me thinking about what it takes to be a champion.  A typical recipe would consist of alot of talent, a sprinkling of good luck and a huge amount of hardwork.

Similar attributes are needed to suceed in business.  If, like myself, you are a sole trader, it’s the hardwork and motivation that will help you achieve your goals and “go for gold.”  You already have the talent, skills and motivation to get your business off the ground.  The hardest part, however, is maintaining that motivation and drive to reach your goals, and staying focused when things get tough.

To help maintain my focus and “go for gold”, I recently set myself a few targets.  These are not business driven, but personal goals that will motivate me to get things done in my business so that I am rewarded for all my hard work.  Like an athlete who is offered a cash incentive to win a medal at the Olympic Games, my incentive is the holiday of a lifetime with my family.  Going on that holiday is one of the goals I’ve put on a progress chart in my office.  Each month I will mark off what I’ve achieved and how far I am from realising my goal.  It’s not rocket science, but it’s a way to keep myself motivated.

I hope that “Team Me” goes for gold and gets to take that holiday of a lifetime!
