The power of social media…
I hadn’t truly realised the power of social media until I signed up to Facebook recently. I signed up because Brad Sugars at his inspirational “Business is Booming” seminar in Melbourne told attendees to do so. The day I joined Facebook was the day after his seminar which I raved about in my blog. As a result of my “rave”, I got a mention on Brad’s facebook page, together with a link to my website. There was a significant increase in the number of unique visitors to the Purple Chameleon website on that same day which was totally unexpected.
My rave about Brad was genuine and his backlink was unexpected and an indirect way of thanking me for a great testimonial. So, not only have I made the decision to get some kind of business coaching on board as a result of the seminar, I’ve also experienced the power of social media.
I am new to Facebook and need to spend more time on it but realise now that it is a great networking tool. Facebook works by enabling users to join networks which can be organised by city, workplace, school and region to connect and interact with other people. Once you logon, you can quickly catch up with friends/colleagues by reading their updates and find out what they’re up to, working on, thinking about, etc. You can look at photos of their new dog, hairstyle, house, work project, etc.
As well as catching up with old friends, you can also find new friends. People you don’t know may invite you to be their friend which you can accept or not. Conversely, you can invite people you don’t know to be your friend which I don’t understand entirely – why would I want to be friends with someone I don’t know, unless there is a common interest? My issue with becoming friends with strangers on Facebook is deciding what level of connection I want to share with that person, how much interaction I want and the things I want to see from him/her.
I’ve just created a a Facebook page for Purple Chameleon. I’m not sure what I’ll post on it yet, but I’ll have a play and see what comes of it. And on a personal level, I invited 3 people I haven’t seen in ages to communicate with me so we’ll see where that goes.
What are your Facebook experiences? Have you used it in your business? Or maybe caught up with someone you haven’t seen in a while? Let me know – email ruth@purplechameleon.com.au.
